Friends Hospital Ranked One of the Region's and Nation’s
 Best Psychiatric Hospitals

Friends Hospital of Northeast Philadelphia was recognized as an "Excellent Center For Medicine" in the "Top Hospitals" May 2003 issue of Philadelphia Magazine. The article, "The Best Medicine – Top Hospitals: Where To Get The Best Care" highlights the finest hospitals and clinics in our communities. Listed under "Mental Health", the description of Friends Hospital follows:

"One of the few remaining hospitals devoted entirely to mental health, this 190-year old Quaker-founded center is famous for its compassionate care. It provides a variety of community support groups for afflictions from alcoholism to manic-depressive illness. Its active involvement in the training of nurses, medical students, psychologists, and fellows is a distinct benefit to patients. It is one of the few places to provide inpatient care and partial hospitalization for kids and adolescents ages five to 19 who have medical and psychological problems. Other noteworthy components are the eating disorders unit, run by Michael Pertschuk, and the Greystone Program, a residential home for the chronically mentally ill that served as a national model when it was begun 23 years ago."

Friends Hospital also was listed as one of the best psychiatric hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report (2000). Each year, U.S. News asks 150 board-certified specialists in 17 specialties – 2,550 in all – to name the five hospitals in their specialty they consider the best, ignoring location and expense. The specialists are chosen at random from the American Medical Association Master List of all 711,749 U.S. physicians.

Hospitals listed in psychiatry are ranked by reputation alone. Friends Hospital and the other ranked hospitals were named by at least 3 percent of the board-certified physicians in this specialty who responded to U.S. News surveys over the past three years.

"It is an honor to be rated as one of America’s best hospitals by such a prestigious and well-respected publication. It is especially meaningful that the ranking was determined by specialists in the field of psychiatry. It is a tribute to the dedication and commitment of Friends Hospital staff, Board and volunteers in providing compassionate mental health services," said Wayne A. Mugrauer, CEO of Friends Hospital.

Friends Hospital, which was founded by Quakers in 1813, is the nation’s first private psychiatric hospital. Friends Hospital offers a range of partial hospital, inpatient and residential services at its Northeast Philadelphia campus for individuals of all ages.
