Contributions
Effective July 1, 2005, Friends Hospital entered into a joint venture partnership with Horizon Health Corporation of Lewisville, Texas, which allows Friends Hospital to operate as a freestanding behavioral health hospital with greater resources while continuing our long tradition of first-rate mental health care guided by Quaker values.
As part of this agreement, Friends Hospital became a for-profit entity. All charitable gifts that have been or will be donated to Friends Hospital are being transferred to a new community benefit foundation, called The Thomas Scattergood Behavioral Health Foundation. Your gift will be directed to the Foundation to fulfill its mission which was adapted from the original mission of Friends Hospital.
We are very excited by the extraordinary opportunity the new Foundation offers to provide leadership in the mental health field. The Foundation’s first point of business will be to assess mental health needs in the Philadelphia region and to adopt a strategic plan that specifies its activities. We will continue our legacy of creating new treatment modalities for those suffering with mental illness. The Foundation will continue administration of the Scattergood Fund, which provides funds for mental health treatment to the uninsured in need of care. The Foundation has also starting fundraising for an educational program in local schools on recognizing the warning signs of teen suicide with the goal of preventing this tragic loss of life. Additionally, it will be the sponsor of many of the programs and activities currently offered by Friends Hospital including Garden Days and the exhibit at the Philadelphia Flower Show.
