Older Adult Program

Friends Hospital has offered specialized behavioral health services for older adults for more than 25 years. As one of the first specialized programs in the country for this population, our program is often looked to as a model for others to follow.

The goal of treatment of Friends Hospital’s Older Adult Program is to enable the patient to return to home or another treatment setting with the least amount of psychiatric care. The patient’s existing strengths are identified and used as a foundation for individualized treatment. We work with the patient and their families to achieve these goals as quickly as possible.

Program Description

Friends Hospital's Older Adult Program is designed specifically for older adults, ages 55 and older. This program addresses a wide range of diagnoses, including, but not limited to depression, psychosis, dementia, behavior problems and complications related to Alzheimer’s Disease. The unit provides intensive care for older adults needing the highest level of psychiatric care.

The program offers daily visits with a board-certified psychiatrist who will individualize treatment based on the patient's particular condition and any previous treatment.

An important part of the treatment philosophy at Friends is the belief that most older adults will benefit from programs specifically designed for their age group, with the opportunity to share feelings and experiences with their peers. In an inpatient setting, older adults may participate in a wide array of comprehensive therapies that are designed to educate them about their illness and treatments. Patients are also given ample opportunity to discuss concerns & stressors that may have contributed to their present condition. Daily activities may include group or family therapy, art therapy, recreational activities, or substance abuse groups.

Families are important contributors to treatment and therefore family involvement is encouraged, including visitation, family therapy and educational groups. Staff works closely with families to make sure that their loved one leaves the inpatient setting with appropriate follow-up care in place.

Treatment Team

Each patient works with a treatment team that consists of a board certified psychiatrist, nurses, primary therapists, discharge planners and other mental health specialists. Members of this team have extensive training, knowledge and experience in handling the special needs of older adults.
