Medical Staff
Members of the medical staff at Friends Hospital are board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or the osteopathic American Board of Neuropsychiatry. These physicians are trained and experienced in diagnosing and treating a variety of mental illnesses, including depression and other affective disorders, anxiety disorders, panic disorders, schizophrenia, phobias, adjustment disorders, borderline personality disorders, eating disorders and many others. Many of the psychiatrists also offer family therapy, couples therapy, and/or group therapy in addition to individual therapy. Most have a general practice treating most mental illness, with an emphasis on inpatient psychiatry.
A psychiatrist is a licensed physician who has graduated from a four-year medical school with either an M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) or D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine). He or she has then completed a four-year residency program specializing in the treatment of of mental and emotional illnesses. The psychiatrist can diagnose and treat physical illnesses causing mental problems, and is the only mental health professional who can prescribe medication.
