Women's Program

The Women's Program at Friends Hospital offers psychiatric and psychological services through an inpatient program specifically designed for women. Our program provides a safe and healing environment using intensive therapy and medications. A comprehensive evaluation is completed to assess each patient's strengths and create programming for her unique needs. Besides addressing basic psychiatric issues we help patients deal with topics which are especially relevant to women including self-esteem, abuse, time and stress management. One of the program's primary goals is to teach coping, assertiveness, self-expression and communication skills that women can use to live their lives with stability and dignity.

Program Description

Our patients suffer from a wide range of psychiatric disorders needing inpatient treatment for the safety of themselves or others, including:

  • Depression and bipolar illness
  • Psychiatric disorders associated with female hormones such as post-partum depression and psychosis, pre-menstrual disphoric disorder, adjustment disorders related to pregnancy and menopausal syndrome
  • Generalized anxiety, panic disorder, phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Adjustment disorder - bereavement, infertility, gender related issues

The treatment is based on a supportive and cognitive behavioral therapy related model with emphasis on individual, group, family and couples therapy. A typical day for a patient in our unit includes approximately five to six groups (anger and stress management, assertiveness, coping skills, illness education, health and wellness, etc.), individual sessions with a psychiatrist and therapists, and medications and support from our nursing staff. Consultation service is provided by an eating disorders program as well as medicine and neurology.

The Treatment Team

The multi-disciplinary treatment team for the Women's Program includes psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, psychotherapists, addictions counselors, social workers and after-care workers, all of whom have expertise in treating the unique behavioral health needs of women.
